The hospital would quarantine you and hand you over to the military, which would be a death sentence. You bandage the wound with a handkerchief, cover it up and go down-town to see your pal, Doc. Doc had been a real doctor until he wracked up gambling debts and got caught writing prescriptions he shouldn't have to pay them off. But he's a good man and has helped you out a few times in the past. He goes paler than the guy who bit you when you show him the wound.
"Any suggestions?" you ask.
"Pray," says Doc.
"I need a doctor, not a comedian."
"I'm not joking," he replies, "You got maybe 48 hours. I'm afraid there's nothing I can do beyond cleaning the wound. Disinfecting it might slow it down but the infection is already in your blood."
