It’s not the anonymous hackney carriage favoured by the well-heeled sons of London society for their visits to the opium dens and brothels of East London, but an expensive-looking private vehicle.Very private: the windows are not only shut, but the glass is darkly smoked and behind their gloomy panes you can make out the folds of thick curtains. Even the little window at the front is obscured, as if the day wasn’t gloomy enough.
